The coronavirus has influenced a new perform by Chinese dissident artist Badiucao in support of Hong Kong pro-democracy protesters.

The piece is Badiucao’s personal take on one of the iconic photos of the 20th century: the lone man standing in the path of a tank in the course of protests in Tiananmen Sq. in 1989, in accordance to Reuters.

In his variation, the tank carries a big particle of the coronavirus. “A New Tank” was unveiled Friday at the Danish Parliament in Copenhagen.

Badiucao explained that “A New Tank” is a protest from the Chinese government, which he thinks is applying the diversion of the worldwide pandemic to crack down on Hong Kong’s pro-democracy movement, Reuters claimed Friday.

“Because of the pandemic predicament and as countries are active controlling it, the Hong Kong govt will do a lot more to crack down on the protests and the leaders and activists of the movement, and they will see it as an opportunity to do it quietly,” Badiucao informed Reuters from Australia, in which he lives.
