The U.S. Condition Section was criticized Sunday about a tweet that tied the historic protests that broke out in Cuba to COVID-19 problems in the state wherever individuals have been living below communism for decades.

Julie Chung, the acting assistant secretary for the department’s Bureau of Western Hemisphere Affairs, posted, “Peaceful protests are escalating in Cuba as the Cuban men and women exercise their correct to peaceful assembly to categorical problem about rising COVID situation/fatalities & drugs lack. We commend the a lot of initiatives of the Cuban individuals mobilizing donations to assist neighbors.”

Chung’s Twitter bio states that tweets from her are signed with a “JC.” The tweet in question did not have her initials. The Point out Section did not promptly answer to Fox Information for clarification.

Stories out of the region reported protesters chanted “Flexibility,” “Ample,” and “We Want Liberty.” Critics say the COVID-19 crisis would seem to be on the periphery of the country’s discontent.

Cuba is heading by means of its worst economic crisis in many years, alongside with a resurgence of coronavirus cases, as it suffers the outcomes of U.S. sanctions imposed by the Trump administration.

Sen. Marco Rubio, R-Florida, termed the tweet from the Condition Department “preposterous.”

“Men and women in Cuba are protesting 62 many years of socialism, lies, tyranny & distress not “expressing concern about increasing COVID instances/fatalities,” he tweeted. “Why is it so challenging for @potus & the folks in his administration to say that?”

Jake Sullivan, the White House countrywide protection adviser, connected the Chung tweet to his write-up stating that the U.S. “supports freedom of expression and assembly throughout Cuba, and would strongly condemn any violence or concentrating on of peaceful protesters who are doing exercises their common suitable.”

Chung’s account later on posted about problem at the State Office over “calls to fight” in Cuba.
